Nellie was born 05/03/04 at 4:00 a.m. to Shawnee Sands and Overcome By Smoke. In this picture, she is about 4 hours old. What a shocker she was when I first saw her. Smoke is double grey bred and has been a 100% grey producer until now. I just assumed Nellie would be grey also. Shows what I know!!!

UPDATE
Sadly, on Saturday May 22, 2004, we made the decision to put our little Nellie down. Friday evening I found her in the stall, unresponsive and having seizures. Initially, we thought she may have sustained a head injury, but after the initial autopsy, they found liver damage and disease. After OSU performed an autopsy on Nellie, it was discovered she suffered from a very rare disease called "Tyzzer's Disease". This disease is always fatal and attacks foals aged 7-40 days. There is no way to prevent or detect this disease unless an autopsy is performed. We want to express our gratitude to the staff and students at the Galbreath Equine Center of the Ohio State University, especially Dr. Yvette Nout. They are all a wonderful, caring group that helped us through a very difficult time.
